Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ guide for your Aviation Journey.

Embarking on your aviation journey? Whether you are a student pilot, lifelong enthusiast, or just starting out, this FAQ guide is here to provide reliable, clear answers. We've compiled essential details, from training requirements and exams to career paths and licensing, offering you simple, reliable, and easy-to-understand insights, all in a single place.

To apply for a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) in India, you must be at least 17 years old on the date of application. The minimum educational qualification required is a pass in Class 10 (or equivalent) from a recognised board.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) requires a minimum of 40 hours of flight time to be logged as a pilot. This 40 hours must include:

  • Not less than 10 hours of solo flight time (flying the aircraft alone).

  • Not less than 5 hours of solo cross-country flight time, which must include a flight of at least 150 nautical miles with full-stop landings at two different aerodromes.

  • Not less than 5 hours of solo flying completed within the 12 months immediately before the date of application

To commence any flight training in India, you must first obtain a DGCA Class 2 Medical Certificate. This certificate is issued by a DGCA-approved medical examiner following a comprehensive physical and mental fitness examination. The Class 2 certificate must be valid throughout your training period, and it ensures you meet the necessary health standards for flying under Visual Flight Rules (VFR).

The typical duration for PPL training, including both ground school and flight time, is generally between 6 to 12 months, depending heavily on weather, aircraft availability, and the student's schedule. The total cost is a variable investment, generally ranging from ₹10 lakh to ₹15 lakh. This covers ground tuition, the minimum flight hours, exam fees, and the Class 2 medical.

A PPL grants the holder the privilege to act as Pilot-in-Command (PIC) or Co-pilot of an aircraft for personal or recreational purposes. The key restriction is that you cannot be paid or receive any remuneration for your flight activity. A PPL is the foundational licence and is the first step for those who wish to fly as a hobby or those planning to pursue a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) later.
